What’s Happening

System signal: The artificial boundary between human health and environmental health continues to disappear.

6. Public & Planetary Health

  • The UN is treating climate and air pollution as one system. The World Meteorological Organization warned that wildfire smoke and heat increasingly undermine improvements made through conventional air-pollution regulation and called for climate and air-quality policy to be coordinated. (Reuters)
  • Indonesia demonstrated the health cost of ecological breakdown. Wildfire-related respiratory infections more than doubled to over 113,000 cases as severe fires and drought affected Sumatra and Borneo, exposing more than 12 million people to smoke and haze. (Reuters)
  • A major long-term 9/11 health study is finally being developed. U.S. health authorities are establishing research to track people exposed as children—or before birth—to World Trade Center contaminants, linking environmental exposure with decades-long health outcomes. (Reuters)
  • The investment gap is becoming clearer. Global sustainability investment reached roughly $2.4 trillion, yet agriculture and manufacturing—together responsible for a major share of emissions—received less than 10% of the total. (Reuters)
