What’s Happening
System signal: Digital democracy is evolving from access to information toward control, accountability and participation in digital systems.
- A federal appeals court blocked new U.S. mail-ballot restrictions. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an injunction against postal requirements that could have affected millions of mail ballots. The dispute reinforces the larger question of who controls election infrastructure: states, Congress or the executive branch. (Reuters)
- Digital voter information is becoming embedded in AI. Google announced election-information features across Search, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, together with additional protections for high-risk political and civic users. Election infrastructure is increasingly becoming part of the information-platform layer. (blog.google)
- California tightened protections for children using social media and AI. New laws target addictive platform design and require safeguards, risk assessments and parental controls around AI chatbots used by minors. The debate now extends beyond data privacy toward the design of digital environments themselves. (The Guardian)
- Data governance is becoming a democracy issue. Researchers and policymakers meeting in India this week examined control over data brokers, cloud infrastructure, platforms and digital identity—not simply privacy, but who possesses power in data-driven societies. (IIIT Hyderabad – IIIT Hyderabad)
