Farm to Facility: Increasing Local Food in New England Prisons

While schools and hospitals have made progress in sourcing local food, meals in prisons and jails remain among the least healthy and least connected to regional food systems. Yet Departments of Correction are among the largest food purchasers in many states, with potential to generate stable, values-based markets for regional producers. Join us to explore findings from Nourishing Justice: A Feasibility Study for Farm to Corrections Work in New England, a two-year USDA-funded project led by FINE, Impact Justice, and partners. Presenters interviewed staff from all six New England Departments of Correction, as well as food hubs and producers. This webinar, hosted by Daniel Rosen of the Coalition for Carceral Nutrition, will share key findings and recommendations for policy, purchasing, matchmaking, and career pathways to help bring nourishing, regionally grown food into correctional facilities.

Brittany Florio
Program Manager, Farm to Institution New England
Britt manages FINE’s program development, outreach, and communications to catalyze change in the dynamic farm to institution movement. She has been working in the food system since 2010. Prior to her work at FINE, Britt co-owned a regenerative herb and vegetable farm business in the Hudson Valley, New York. After leaving the farm life, she worked at UMass Amherst as the Sustainability Coordinator for UMass Dining and as an adjunct faculty member, teaching Sustainability Science. Britt holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Natural Resources from the University of Connecticut and a Master’s degree in Sustainability Science with a concentration in Sustainable Food Systems and Agriculture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In her free time, Britt loves fermenting foods, kayaking, foraging, and making wild flower bouquets.
Leslie Soble
Senior Program Manager, Impact Justice
Leslie manages the Food in Prison Project and is the lead author of Impact Justice’s national report, Eating Behind Bars: Ending the Hidden Punishment of Food in Prison. Beyond Impact Justice, Leslie is the founder and artistic director of Story Soup, a project that creates contexts for dialogue across cultural and generational borders through food and narrative. Her ongoing academic research focuses on food as a cultural text, aesthetic domain, and site of performance. Leslie also serves as a teaching artist with various DC-based arts programs and has over a decade of experience designing and facilitating cultural competency workshops to explore identity, systems of oppression, and intercultural/intergenerational communication. Leslie holds an MA in cultural sustainability from Goucher College, a BA in gender studies from Brown University.
Daniel A. Rosen
Co-Founder, Coalition for Carceral Nutrition
Daniel A. Rosen is a justice reform advocate and writer who was incarcerated in both Virginia and Washington, D.C. from 2015 to 2021. Before co-founding the Coalition for Carceral Nutrition, he worked as an advocacy Campaign Manager for Worth Rises, a nonprofit that works to dismantle the prison industry and end the exploitation of those it affects. Prior to incarceration, Daniel spent almost twenty years in public service, in both the non-profit and governmental sectors. He served previously at the Departments of State and Defense on national security issues, including as Director of Counterterrorism Programs at the State Department. Daniel has been recognized throughout his career for successful management of programs, people, and funds to serve the public trust.
Daniel has also spent fifteen years in various hospitality and other jobs. He’s been a bartender, waiter, barista, cab driver, pizza deliveryman, EMT, SAT tutor, lifeguard, and bank teller. In prison, he served as a GED instructor, tutor, dog trainer, and maintenance worker. Daniel holds a Master’s degree from Tufts University, and a B.A. with Honors from UCLA. He’s passionate about real food, cooking and nutrition, ice cream, motorcycles, books, world travel, baseball, thrifting, and the power of words. He’s traveled to over 60 countries, and currently resides in Washington, D.C.
