What’s Happening
System signal: Food innovation is moving from laboratory possibility to regulation, infrastructure, economics and scale.
- Precision fermentation and cultivated food are moving deeper into regulation. Britain’s food-safety system reported progress assessing its first cell-cultivated food applications while developing more formal science-based frameworks for precision fermentation and cultivated products. (GOV.UK)
- Additional precision-fermentation and cultivated-food applications moved toward regulatory review.Updated UK materials released September 9 include applications involving precision-fermented proteins, microbial biomass and cell-cultivated products. (GOV.UK)
- Genome editing is moving closer to mainstream agriculture. Bayer highlighted work on genome-edited climate-resilient crops, while countries including India are creating regulatory pathways that distinguish some gene-edited plants from conventional GM crops. Two Indian genome-edited rice varieties designed for higher yields and salinity tolerance are moving toward farmers. (The Financial Express)
- Alternative proteins are entering a market-consolidation phase. Upside Foods withdrew its bid for the former Believer Meats cultivated-chicken facility, illustrating the financial pressures facing capital-intensive cultivated-meat production even as fermentation-based approaches continue attracting investment.
