ACCA Codes & Coffee: Combustion Analysis and the Black Hole

When you drill a hole in a vent pipe to analyze combustion performance, how do you safely seal it? After a hole is drilled in plastic pipe (PVC), especially for a condensing appliance with positive vent pressure, there’s no clear answer. While combustion analysis is valuable, no standards or guidance exist to seal holes in plastic pipe.
Some vent pipe OEMs offer an optional test port vent segment on the flue outlet. The National Fuel Gas Code Committee is also considering related proposals. But what should contractors do right now?
