ACCA Codes & Coffee: Combustion Analysis and the Black Hole

Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. ET

When you drill a hole in a vent pipe to analyze combustion performance, how do you safely seal it? After a hole is drilled in plastic pipe (PVC), especially for a condensing appliance with positive vent pressure, there’s no clear answer. While combustion analysis is valuable, no standards or guidance exist to seal holes in plastic pipe.

Some vent pipe OEMs offer an optional test port vent segment on the flue outlet. The National Fuel Gas Code Committee is also considering related proposals. But what should contractors do right now?

Join David Bixby, ACCA’s manager of codes and standards, and a panel of industry experts to discuss what’s happening in the field and whether the industry needs a consensus method for safe flue gas measurement that reduces contractor liability. The following panelists have been confirmed:

Jim Bergmann, measureQuick®️

Larry Gill, IPEX

Tony Gonzalez, Fieldpiece Instruments

Louise Keller, UEi Test Instruments

Ed Lehr, Jack Lehr Heating Cooling & Electric

Tyler Nelson, Sauermann Group, Americas

David Richardson, National Comfort Institute, Inc.

Jim VerShaw, Trane Technologies
