Peer-to-Peer: Threat to Artists or Threat to Business Models – The Washington Lawyers Speak
This past December the Pew Charitable trust released a survey which found that 69% of artists thought P2P was either no threat at all or a minor problem. Yet, the RIAA testified in support of legislation aimed at shutting down P2P companies – the INDUCE bill introduced at their behest in the US Senate last session. Many public interest groups as well as technology, telecommunications, and consumer electronics companies vehemently opposed that legislation. In the RIAA testimony, and in their request to the Supreme Court to hear their plea to overturn the decision finding Grokster and Streamcast not liable for aiding P2P users who uploaded and downloaded copyrighted songs and movies, said that P2P was causing “massive and irreparable harm…. Record sales over the past three years are down 31%….” Hear the Washington lawyers for content, technology, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and public interest debate the legal issues swirling around P2P and decide for yourself whether new legislation or new business models, or both are needed.
